The challenge

Payroll combines personal records, calculations, pay periods, and reporting. Fragmented files make corrections harder to trace and increase the chance that different versions of the same information are used.

The approach

The system groups employee records, payroll processing, salary history, and reports around a repeatable pay-period workflow. Validation and readable summaries are treated as operational requirements, not decoration.

Key product decisions

  • Separate employee identity from changing payroll details
  • Preserve payroll history by period
  • Validate required inputs before calculation
  • Keep reports connected to source records

The outcome

The production workflow provides a more organized place to manage employee and payroll information. It is intentionally focused on record consistency and understandable processing rather than trying to cover every HR function.

What the project taught us

Sensitive workflows benefit from explicit boundaries. Clear states, validation, and history are more valuable than adding many controls to a single screen.
